The simplest way to hook up a mouse to your PC is through a wired USB connection. The humble trackball has been superseded by two types of light-based motion sensors: optical (or LED) and laser. It might be a bit pricey for a non-gaming mouse, but its ergonomic grip, extensive configurability and precise tracking make it more than worth the outlay for something you'll use every day.
